At Home Before Your Surgery at Saint Mary's Hospital

The night before surgery: Your evening meal should be a light or liquid dinner. You may NOT eat or drink anything by mouth after midnight (12 a.m.) the night before your surgery. Any medications taken after midnight should be done so with a minimal amount of water.

You must shower using the special soap (Hibiclens) we gave you or soap approved by your surgeon. Wash your entire body, except your face, using the special sponge with soap. Please let us know if you are allergic to Hibiclens or have any allergies to linens.

The morning of surgery: Take another shower using the second Hibiclens sponge (or appropriate) soap.

Wear NO makeup, deodorant, perfume, lotion or jewelry to the hospital the day of your surgery.Please remove all nail polish from your fingers and toes.

WOMEN: Please wear/bring a bra to the hospital. You will use this after surgery for support and comfort. Take only medications your surgeon told you to take. Any medications should be taken with a minimal amount of water.

When brushing your teeth, do not swallow the rinse water.

You may use our Valet Parking service on the morning of your surgery.Simply pull up to the main entrance and your car will be parked for you.

Your family/friends may stay with you until you are taken to surgery. There is a family waiting area outside the O’Brien elevators on the 3rd floor. The nurse who will be caring for you after your surgery will introduce her/himself to your family and answer any questions. If your family/friends need to leave the hospital during your surgery, they should provide a phone number where they can be contacted to your nurse.
